Jeff MeyersA few years ago, Jeff Meyers was asked if he would join our HART Board to help us organize and direct our organization as an attorney, and for his wisdom.
He accepted, and HART received a treasure in Jeff. He quickly chose to join us on a mission trip to Haiti and ended up being a co-leader, using his great administrative skills. Last year, Jeff became HART’s Chairman. But there's a “real story” behind Jeff Myers...it is his heart for the Haitian people! Let us share a few examples. Jeff learned that the entire Parish of St. Jude Church in the mountains had no electricity. HART had purchased a major generator, but the Parish needed an inverter which was quite costly. HART started a donation program when Jeff stepped in and bought it himself (so there would be no delay) for St. Jude Parish (so there was light for the church, rectory, and school). Last year, we traveled to La Gonave (an island off the coast of Haiti which is extremely poor, even by Haitian standards). The church there (St. Louis) had no generator and the roof had so many holes, rain streamed inside with each storm. Jeff chose to purchase them a generator and assembled a small team to pitch in and purchase a new church roof, and help repair the whole church (the church is exposed to the elements and needed repairs). Last year, Jeff noticed that the boys orphanage at St. Jude’s was in horrible disrepair. The living conditions were unacceptable. Jeff raised funds and created a team of men to repair and repaint the entire orphanage. Kids who had lived in squalor now lived in an updated home with clean walls, an outhouse WITH a door (there was no privacy door previously), and improved kitchen facilities. This April, there was political unrest in Haiti. Fr. Roosevelt, the pastor of St. Jude Parish contacted us and said the people in the mountain had no food nor water. The only road up the mountain was blocked by gangs. When Jeff, heard this, he personally arranged his own funds to send truckloads of food and water using a back road to avoid the gangs. Jeff singlehandedly saved lives of people who were already hungry and malnourished. And then this August, Jeff again came to the rescue. A 14 year old young man suffering from “pituitary dwarfism” named Angel Jean-Baptiste was living in an orphanage and was the height of a 6 year old. HART was able to assemble amazing donors to purchase growth hormone - Angel grew 2 inches within the first several weeks of therapy! Because of your loving response to our request for help - HART was able to buy Angel TWO YEARS worth of growth hormone. However, the United States issued a "do not travel" ban to Haiti because of the political unrest. We had no way to get Angel his medication and because of his age, he needed to get the growth hormone immediately (once his growth plates seal, he will no longer experience growth, even with growth hormone). Growth hormone is fragile and needs to be refrigerated - it can't be shipped. Jeff was committed to Angel, so he purchased a plane ticket (despite the US "no travel"warning) and he personally delivered Angel his medication. When HART decided to travel to La Gonave - Jeff flew to Haiti a few months ahead of our medical team to look over the facilities to make sure they were safe and usable. Jeff is like that - he exposes himself to discomfort and danger in order to help others avoid it. Please share our love and applause for HART HERO Jeff Myers. This is a man who heard Jesus’ call to love the least of our brothers and sisters. He feeds, clothes, helps medically and dentally treat, and even serves Haitians in prison. Jeff is a true "HART HERO." If you would like to donate to HART to help people (like Jeff does) please visit our Donate page. |
